History of SecMet (Pty) Ltd

SecMet (Pty) Ltd was formed in February 1996. The history of the company dates back to 1978 when the Metallurgical and Corrosion Services Division of Sasol was established in Secunda to provide a service to Sasol Two and Three, currently known as Sasol East and West, which were then under construction. In 1989 the division was transferred to Sastech, the Technology and Research arm of the Sasol Group of Companies. It operated as a business unit within Sastech until February 1996 when SecMet was formed as the result of a management buy-out with the co-operation and consent of Sastech Management. SecMet was bought by MegChem to complement their existing consulting engineering services in 1997. In 2017, under MegChem Holdings, SecMet split off from MegChem in order to focus on and operate in their own unique areas of expertise within the metallurgical and quality engineering arena. SecMet specialises in providing comprehensive metallurgical and quality engineering services to industry in South Africa and internationally. These services are provided through a team of experienced, well-qualified and highly motivated metallurgical engineers and inspectors. The engineers are active in the petrochemical, power generation, mining, paper, manufacturing, construction and legal sectors. The head office is based in Secunda and includes a well-equipped laboratory. The office specialising in forensic and remnant life studies is located in Centurion. SecMet is ISO 9001 accredited and is currently implementing ISO 17025.

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

Metallurgical Engineering is the study of the internal structure and engineering behaviour of metals and engineering materials. Metallurgical knowledge is applied to study the structural strength, environmental interaction, deformation behaviour and failure of in-service engineering components. A comprehensive metallurgical consulting service encompassing all aspects of physical and mechanical metallurgy, materials engineering, welding and corrosion, is supplied by SecMet. A team of experienced metallurgical experts are supported by a well-equipped metallurgical laboratory, enabling SecMet to provide a one-stop metallurgical service ranging from advanced failure investigations and Asset Integrity Management studies to basic material testing and certification. Due to our origins from the petrochemical industry, SecMet has developed specialist capabilities in the field of Risk Based Inspection (RBI), Fitness-for-service (FFS), Remaining Life Assessment (RLA), plant integrity assessment, as well as corrosion engineering, testing and monitoring.

Quality Engineering

Quality Engineering focuses on assuring the quality of welded fabrications through the various phases of a project, and ensure that all Legislative, Statutory, Health and Safety Standards and Client specific specifications are adhered to during project execution. The quality engineering department’s resources consist of metallurgists, welding engineers, inspectors of pressurised equipment (IPE’s) and quality control inspectors.
